FEBRUARY 2022

 February 27, 2022

This is Carolyn in the Middle,

Geographically, there is very little ‘east’ in the Middle East. So why is the region named this way?  This really is fascinating and a quick read. I’m 63 and still learning plenty as I travel.

What exactly is this region to the east of?  And what exactly is it in the middle of?  In the mid 19th century the British Empire was vast and powerful.  They used the phrase ‘Orient’ to describe the East and split it into 3 distinct areas.

- the Near East, included Turkey and the Balkans
- the Far East, included Asian countries along the Pacific Ocean
- and the countries in-between came to be known as the Middle East

1)  I’ve seen a map identifying 18 countries that compose the Middle East.
2)  We’ve traveled to 9 of them.
3)  We left Dubai Monday,
4)  spent 2 days in the Kingdom of Saudi,
5)  and  two more in amazing Bahrain.
6)  LDS church services were Friday here, they meet in a converted home.  Their baptismal font is quite large.
7)  And now we are loving our first day in Oman!
8)  Tomorrow we begin a 9 day road trip down the seacoast and back via the Arabian desert,
9)  also known as the ‘empty quarter’ or largest continuous sand sea in the world.
10)  It covers 250,000 sq miles and is shared by 4 countries

Okay.  Class dismissed.  This week we both felt deeply concerned that our travel plans might be thwarted in Saudi Arabia.  Eventually it all worked out.  It was worrisome for only a few hours but we felt completely helpless.  We often watch news in our hotel room and sorrow greatly as the Ukrainian people are fleeing from or fighting for their homes, families and freedoms.  We have added them to our prayers.

“There will be times when the path ahead seems dark, but keep following the Savior.  He knows the way; in fact, He is the way.”  Stephen W Owen, former General YM President

Please tell us how you are doing and share photos when you can.
We switched out Lane’s sim card today so emails are the best way to reach him.  Or text him on Carolyn’s number.

Important dates:
February 27th - Chris has a birthday today.  He is 42!
Somewhere hidden between February 28th and March 1st is the multiverse which is Tesila’s birthday.  Happy 14th!
March 6th - Emeline will be a driving force on this birthday.

We love you forever!

 February 20, 2022

Hi,

Thursday we fled to the desert.

1)  We rode 4x4’s over dunes,
2)  then went dune-bashing in a caravan of ten Land Cruisers,
3)  went sandboarding,
4)  (our guide was a natural photographer)
5)  hopped on a camel🐪,
6)  watched the sunset over a Bedouin camp,
7)  ingested a BBQ buffet
8)  while watching bellydancers,
9)  flame throwers,
10) & a whirling dervish.

Another day to remember.

Happy Birthday to:
Britni ~ 39 on the 24th
Chris ~ 42 on the 27th

We leave our sweet little humble Dubai apartment and fly to Saudi Arabia Tuesday. What’s new with you?

We love you forever!

Hey everybody.
We may be like Spiderman…'Far From Home’ but we still ‘attended’ Gaylin’s funeral, via Zoom, Saturday 10pm to midnight.  Tonight we’ll attempt to watch the Super Bowl.
How y’all doin?

Wanna history/geography lesson?  There’s a test at the end...
1)  The U.A.E. is an infant country…only 5 decades old
2)  formed in 1971 when 7 small emirates (countries) combined to form the United Arab emirates
3)  making it a bigger country with a bigger global voice
4)  it is slightly smaller than the US state of Maine
5)  in the late 19th century the pearling and fishing trades flourished
6)  in 1966 oil was discovered
7)  and VIOLA! Tick-Tick-BOOM! this country explodes into the fantastical oasis it is today
8)  Locals make up 20% of Dubai’s population while the other 80% are expats (people living outside their own countries)
9)  Islam is the official religion here and tolerance is a proclaimed virtue
10)  law enforcement is highly effective here (FYI - the police force boasts the inclusion of 14 supercars; including the exotic Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari and Lamborghini
if you have 2 minutes we recommend this:  https://youtu.be/JUlbcuy1ao0

Hello fabulous family,

Facts about the TALLEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD!!!  The Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE

1)   163 floors
2)   2,716.5 feet tall
3)   It’s held the record since 2010.
4)   It is 3 x the height of the Eiffel Tower...
5)   …and nearly double the Empire State Building.
6)   It took only 6 years to complete.
7)   The weight of the concrete used = 100,000 elephants.
8)   It’s a 60 second ride to get to the observation deck on floor 124.
(You can go to level 148 but the cost is $150 pp, even more $ if you want to see the sunset)
9)   There is a light show on the building every 1/2 hour.
10)   Ghost Protocol (MI:4) was literally filmed on the building.

People say the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building but in fact the library is because it has more stories.   ;o}

JANUARY 2022

January 30, 2022
It’s Sunday afternoon, we leave for Dubai this evening.  Which means I showered, dressed and won’t change clothes until Tuesday.  It’s a long trip and we fly over the dateline.

News update:  Gaylin Poulson, husband of deceased Colleen Howell Poulson, passed away last evening at the home of his youngest daughter in NC.  Kim’s family lovingly cared for Gaylin and considered it a privilege to have him with them for his final 2 years.  When I know more about any memorial service I will pass it along.  I will send contact info for Shelly, Debbie, Melonie, Kyle and Kim to the Howell kids later today.  We will miss Gaylin.  He was quick to laugh, fun to be with, loved fishing, a great BBQ-er, loved his little pooch, missed Colleen…until now.  Life continues for us all.  I know that!

See 2 photos of Teotihuacan [teotiwa’kan].  Have you heard of it?  It’s pretty cool, see it if you can.  The top photo: 2003, standing on top of the Pyramid of the Sun overlooking the Pyramid of the moon.  The second photo, 2022 standing in front of the Pyramid of the Sun, it is not allowed to climb either pyramid anymore.  This pyramid was unearthed 1904-1912.  It had appeared as a hill of stone rubble with trees and plants growing up from the rocks.  The archeologist hired to do the excavation, also looted the sacred sight and barely escaped Mexico for Europe never to return to his homeland (at least that’s what our guide told us).
Top 10 things we did in Mexico, also the only 10 things we did since I was unwell for the first 17 days.
1)  Explored our neighborhood on foot.
2)  Watched Spiderman - No Way Home at our local theater.
3)  Did a fair sampling of Mexican meals.
4)  Enjoyed our close proximity to The Angel of Independence statue…
5)  …and the Huntress Diana Fountain.
6)  Took an afternoon Hop On Hop Off bus tour.
7)  Elevatored and climbed to the top of the Revolution Memorial.
8)  Ubered to the ancient city of Teotihuacan, about 25 miles outside Mexico City.
9)  Strolled to Chapultepec Park and toured the Castle/National History Museum.
10)  Got soaked in our rooftop pool and sauna.

Lane has also felt fortunate to watch the NFL playoff games on TV in Español.

This coming week:
January 30th - Today the Englands are feeling the 7-yr itch.  That’s my mother and step-dad and the 7-yr itch is an anniversary thing.
February 1st - We land in the UAE (United Arab Emirates and stay in Dubai for 3 weeks)
February 3rd - Genevieve is already FOUR!!!
February 4th - Callie Jo celebrates turning a fabulous 37!
February 4th - Rayson is eleven times Genevieve.  That’s an elementary story problem.  If Genevieve is 4 and Rayson drives 60 MPH to his job 45 miles away but only has 30 minutes for his lunch break  and his happy meal costs $5.75 and he is 11 times older than Genevieve what age is Rayson during the 2nd month of this year?
February 6th - Brennan enjoys his last year as a tween, or three times Genevieve.  ;o}

We love you forever.  No matter what!

Bodacious, beautiful, benevolent, brood,

This week’s collage:

1)  After feeling low for 4 weeks I feel great again!!!
2)  Yesterday we finally left our neighborhood...
3)  ...and took the Hop On Hop Off bus through central Mexico City.
4)  My destination was the Revolution Monument.
5)  We hopped off and took the elevator up to the copper dome.
6) From there, we took a meandering staircase to the observation deck at the tippy top.
7) Neat views of this huge city.
8) Once back on the ground we treated ourselves to a cup of corn, topped with mayo and cheese.
9) Lane loves to photo bomb ‘quinceañera’ gatherings…but they invited us both to participate.
10) It was a wonderful day!

Update on Uncle Gaylin:
Having fallen on Thanksgiving, it was discovered his body was laden with cancer.  Doctor’s thought he might have days or weeks left.  He’s still holding on after 2 months.  He is just recently bed ridden, cared for by Kim Poulson Herbst and her family in NC.  Gaylin sleeps most of the day, is not eating, but requests juice, milk, etc.  He is in good hands. His 5 kids gathered around him in December to reminisce, embrace him and say their goodbyes.  His passing seems very near.  We will keep you posted.  Please remember Gaylin and his family in your prayers. They would love to hear from you.

WE love to hear from you too!!!!  Thank you so much to those who responded last week.  It really was a shot in the arm.  That’s probably what cured me  ;o}

January 9, 2022

Me again…I am admittedly cheating by sharing a collage of NINE photos for my picture of the week.  What would you do?

1)  We arrived in Mexico City last Tuesday.
2)  Near the heart of this incredible city stands the Angel of Independence memorial.
3)  Our apartment location choice was based on it’s nearness to this statue.
4)  We spent a week in Mexico City in 2003...
5)  …and we remembered driving past this beautiful memorial.
6)  I had no clue I would ever see it again.
7)  We picnicked on its steps.
8) A  N.Y.C. "Shake Shack’ franchise is located on the same circle…convenient!
9)  We found a Walmart Express within walking distance…
10) …and bought these 2-bite blueberries.  Huge.  Sooo yummy!  I am sooo spoiled.  And still tired.  And resting lots and lots.

Coming this week:

1)  This is an amazing family!
2)  I am so blessed that you each have made room for me in your heart.
3)  I love you all!
4)  Thanksgiving was an exciting day and I see that each of you had a blast during Carrie's photo shoot.
5)  Over 3 dozen photos were taken in various groupings.
6)  All smiles, ‘cept a few grimaces under the weight of ‘Dad’.  ;o}
7)  I see you supporting and encouraging each other.
8)  No matter what path you are on, or where you are on said path...
9)  …that love, respect and encouragement will be steady.
10)  Please forgive my misunderstandings and failings. Help me improve.
11)  Hang tough. Together we are tougher than Covid.
12)  The Howell family IS amazing!

I believe the Book of Mormon teaches us how to be more like Christ. When our Savior visited the Americas, one of the first things he taught was the need to eliminate contention in our lives.  So, please be compassionate, be understanding, be slow to judge, and be quick to forgive.  May this be a wonderful year of purpose and possibilities for all of us!

December 2021

December 26, 2021

I’ve almost had enough catch-up for the day.

1)  Did you all have Merry CHRISTmas’?
2)  We are so very grateful for the time we were able to spend with most of you. Wait, that sounds like we did not enjoy time with everyone.  We loved every minute we had together; some for a few days, some hosted us for dinner, some for a quick drop-off, others we had to cancel plans because I wasn’t well.
3)  We made personal deliveries to 14 homes.
4)  It took 3 weeks to reach everyone, but we were delighted.
5)  Several of you already built your personal puzzle.
6)  And Lincoln helped Lane build his.
6)  We’ll be letting you know our travel schedule so we can make plans to redeem your activity coupons.
7)  We ate Chinese takeout for Christmas dinner this year.
8)  My weightloss this week was unintentional but a nice perk of loosing my appetite. ;o}
9)  I chose to rest and relax to gain back my strength.
10)  Honestly, we do think the world of you!

Important dates:
December 28th ~  Lincoln marked his 44th year!
January 2nd ~  Michael has reached the BIG THUR-TEE!  (That’s 30)
January 4th ~ We fly to Mexico City
February ~ We fly to Dubai
March ~ We fly to Cairo

1) It happened the Sunday before CHRISTmas.
2) Charla knows how to throw proper party.
3) Her peppermint theme was found throughout!
4) There was coloring…always with the coloring.
5)  And word games.
6) Digital elves were dancing.
7) Kids were hysterical with laughter.
8)  Salad buffet was just right.
9)  Cookie buffet was somehow just righter!
10) My sisters all had lighted headbands…weirdos!

This is it!  We are back…kinda.
1)  Last Monday our renters left (5 months early) due to a work transfer to Ohio.
2)  We stopped in on Tuesday to become reacquainted with our yaks.
3)  AND we placed our souvenir from Istanbul...
4)  …a Turkish carpet.
5)  It shocked and impressed Carolyn...
6)  …that the carpet fit perfectly in the dining room.
7)  Yesterday Adelaide was baptized.  Thanks for the invitation.
8)  Greg invited us to come see his new fire pit…
9)  …and mushroom growing farm.
10)  Steph invited me to furniture shop with her.  That was fun!
11)  Last evening I drove my parents to a reception for my nephew LeGrand who dated his girlfriend for 981 days before she finally married him!

Today:
Matthew begins his final teenage year.  This evening we are honored to be invited to share in a birthday dinner for Matthew with his family and other distinguished grandparents.  Today we also practice with the ward choir (believe me when I say they need Lane’s voice more than mine) and we stop by the bishop’s office for our tithing settlement and to ask about a future senior mission.  Then we will stop in to visit our house again.  Our renters were perfect for us and left all of the lightbulbs and none of the dirt.

We love you forever!

Fine unfeathered friends,
🕊🦤🦢🦩🐓🦃 Ha!

It’s already another fine sabbath day. Did you enjoy your extra hour last night?

Last Thursday I spent 1.5 hrs at the Apple Genius Bar attempting to backup my digital photos and another 18 hrs at home watching it fail.

I found my salvation when Linc refused to give up on a problem he described as “sipping a Nielsen’s frozen custard concrete through a coffee sipping straw”. Even now he is patiently uploading my photos using state of the art equipment.

I’m planning to place my 2 terabyte hard drives and perhaps my computer in Daybreak Lake, wait for winter, let it freeze, taking photos every day and call it an art project.

On a much happier note…

1) Lane and I are catching up with family and friends.
2) last week was a Zupa lunch with my Mother & baby sister.
3) if you haven’t seen us yet…
4) …you’ve been warned.
5) we love being back in the USA!
6) I need to buy more vitamin C
7) Almond Joys are the best candy bars ever made!
8) do I really need to see the dentist for a new crown 🦷  this week?
9) I’d rather spend the $700 on Christmas gifts.
10) maybe the Almond Joys are to blame for the crown.

This week, and this week only:
10th ~ Scott will be a studly 17 year old!
15th ~ Matthew begins his final teenage year!

We love you forever,
