Happy New Year!

We settled in quickly, getting to know our neighborhood and making new friends. We live on the upper Westside of Manhattan. Our one bedroom apartment is near Lincoln Center, Central Park and a 15 minute walk to Times Square. It was wonderful to see our son Lincoln who came for Christmas with his amazing wife Carrie, and fun boys Matthew and Scott. (They will be in Boston until June 2008 as they complete grad school.)

Start spreading the news...

..we are leaving today....I want to be a part of it, New York, New York! (those really are lyrics to a famous song.)

It is 5:30 am and we are excited to begin what promises to be an exciting adventure. We are leaving our home in Salt Lake City (West Jordan) and flying East. Photos show our home we are selling to help finance our mission, and a few pics of our training. Unlike the young missionaries we are able to call, email and blog often. However, we agree to stay put in NYC for 2 years.

Lane’s passport has expired. So today we went to Walmart studios for new passport photos. I think the government may not only issue us new passports but they may actually pay us to leave!

Being semi-retired we wore ourselves out traveling the country this past summer (a few photos to follow). Then we decided it might be better if we could give volunteer service for a non-profit group. So, we submitted an application to spend two years giving Christian sevice for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We will use the Walmart pictures to renew our passports, attach to our mission application, and share with our family.

[November 15th we received notice that the LDS Church actually will accept our service. We have been asked to volunteer in their New York Office of Public and International Affairs. What a sweet assignment!]
